Bathurst: Australia's Gold Country

In 1815 the colonists of Australia blazed a road west through the Blue Mountains to settle in Bathurst. The beginning was difficult: cattle ranchers and farmers were cut off from the rest of the colony. That changed with the gold rush of the 1850s, when a boom of settlements appeared across the land. Today, the whole central part of Bathurst has been heritage-listed to preserve the history it possesses. And in the months of April and October, the vintage streets come alive with fans of the exciting Mount Panorama V-8 racing!

Tips in this Tour:
Go to the Visitor Center for great information on attractions, souvenirs, and local produce, and to see some of the historic artifacts that are on display.
Visit during V-8 racing, Easter weekend or in October, to see a town brought to life when people from all over the world come to enjoy Australia’s racing history.
Rent a car (or bring your own) to drive the track yourself during the off-season, or to take in the small surrounding country towns that are full of surprises. Public transport to most sites is not as readily available as in other cities in Australia.
There are many self-drive tours to see surrounding settlements, Cobb & Co. Heritage Trail, or beautiful caves and national parks.
Some of the manors and museums are only open on the weekends, so plan your trip accordingly.
