Beijing: Finding Peace And Quiet

The most popular tourist attractions in Beijing can be very crowded, making your visit to the Chinese capital stressful. It’s possible to escape some of the crowds by heading off the beaten path. The Temple of Heaven and Yonghegong are popular attractions, but they don’t draw tourists like the Forbidden City. You can take a drive to the mountains to see Beijing’s oldest temple, Tanzhesi. Or head out to scenic ShiDu, with its karst mountain formations: it’s known as the Guilin of the north. Beijing is full of small parks and temples to enjoy, or you can chill out at a sidewalk café in Houhai or Sanlitun.

Tips in this Tour:
If the weather is nice, plan on a picnic lunch at places such as Tanzhe' Temple, ShiDu or any of the Beijing parks. It's a nice break from restaurants. Your hotel dining room may be able to fix sandwiches, or visit a Chinese market to pick up what you need.
Get to know the various neighborhoods by getting off the subway at random stops. Spend awhile walking around, then hop back on and ride to another destination. Some subway stops are within a long walking distance of each other, so you could hike between them.
Bring disposable plastic forks if you don’t think you can manage chopsticks; small neighborhood restaurants probably won’t have any. Don’t worry about holding your chopsticks properly; if you can feed yourself, you’re doing fine.
Avoid expensive ATM withdrawal fees by getting money only at a Chinese bank that is affiliated with your bank at home. This way you’ll only have to pay currency conversion fees.  Contact your bank before you go for its Chinese affiliate.
Just because you see members of the same sex holding hands or walking arm in arm, don’t assume they are gay. This is acceptable behavior, particularly among young people, in China.
