Alaska Starts Here: Seward, Alaska

Seward, Alaska has long been an important connection between Alaska and the Lower 48. As such, it is a common stopover for many travelers. Yet visitors often miss Seward’s wonders, spending only a short time here on their way to more exotic destinations.

In this tour, we will explore both sides of Seward--the busy tourist stop and the quaint fishing village. We will unearth the town’s quiet yet vibrant heart and discover the natural wonders all around. Along the way, you will learn tips and tricks for living like a local, minimizing costs, and maximizing your enjoyment.

Tips in this Tour:
Before your trip to Seward, consider ordering the Great Alaskan TourSaver book, priced at $100. The two for one savings in the book are invaluable. A quick internet search will provide more information. Local coupon books, offering more modest discounts, can also be purchased at public locations around Seward.
Leave time in your schedule for shopping in Seward. Local stores such as Once in a Blue Moose are unique and packed with fascinating Alaska-made items. The influence of early Russian settlers can also be found in many shops. Even the hardware store and the Radio Shack are undeniably Alaskan, so be sure to stop by!
Make it a point to talk to everyone you encounter. Seward’s residents are well-known for their friendly and open demeanor, and you will learn more about Alaska than you ever thought possible. Locals are a particularly great source of information for planning trips to nearby towns.
Seward’s crime rate is so low as to be practically nonexistent, making it safe to explore at all hours. According to the former mayor, who now owns a downtown bookshop, the last murder took place around 2006! Of course, common sense is always recommended.
Seward lies between the cold ocean water on one side and the always snow-capped mountains on the other. This makes the weather extremely unpredictable and often chilly. Dress in layers and be sure to carry good rain gear. Even during the summer, cold snaps can come on unexpectedly in the middle of the day.
