Carcassonne In The South Of France
|
|
Tips in this Tour:
 | Bring your walking shoes! Hiking up to the Cite is a steep trek--after all, the castle was built on top of a hill! Bring shoes meant for walking cobblestone streets and uneven pathways. |
 | Watch the clock. The French eat lunch between 12 and 1 pm (give or take), and once it is over, it’s over. You don’t want to miss your midday meal so make sure to head for your nearest restaurant around noon. |
 | Apartments versus hotels. If you plan to make Carcassonne your base for exploring the south of France, consider a short-term holiday apartment rental instead of a hotel. There are many charming apartments for rent by the week within Carcassonne’s boundaries. Renting a country house outside of Carcassonne is also an excellent option if you have a car. |
 | Closed at lunch. Many shops and sites are closed at lunch time, which can mean from 12 noon to 4pm. Plan accordingly having a long lunch by the Canal du Midi or read the paper over coffee on the Plaza. |
 | Day tripping: Head to Toulouse or Narbonne for the day. These two larger cities offer another look into life in the south of France. Both are an easy drive from Carcassonne, or catch the train from Carcassonne’s center to either destination. |
